India witnesses big rise in EV sales

NEW DELHI: India has seen a major growth in the sale of electric vehicles (EVs) in the past fiscal year, official statistics showed.

According to the data issued by the federal Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Tuesday, there was an over three-fold rise in the sale of electric Passenger Vehicles (Cars and SUVs) in India during the fiscal year 2021-22 (April 2021-March 2022) compared to the fiscal year 2019-20 (April 2019-March 2020).

Meanwhile, the sale of electric three-wheelers jumped nearly 11 times and that of electric two-wheelers surged over nine-folds in the fiscal year 2021-2022. A total of 19,000 electric passenger vehicles, 178,000 three-wheelers and 231,000 two-wheelers were sold during the period.

Over the years the federal government has taken several measures to promote the EV sales, including a five-year budget support package of 100 billion Indian rupees (nearly 1.2 billion U.S. dollars).

The Indian government has also approved an investment of 181 billion Indian rupees (about 2.18 billion dollars) in the production of advanced chemistry cells needed for manufacturing electric vehicles. Xinhua
