Kathmandu: An appeal has been registered at the Supreme Court (SC) against the decision of the High Court Patan to release on bail the suspended national cricket team captain, Sandeep Lamichhane, who has been accused of raping a minor.

The Office of the Attorney General on Tuesday filed the appeal at the apex court against the decision of the high court.

Scrapping the order of the District Court Kathmandu to remand Lamichhane to judicial custody, the High Court decided to release him conditionally with a bail amount of Rs 2 million. A writ petition has been filed at the SC against the high court decision on releasing Lamichhane on bail.

A divisional bench of High Court Patan Justice Ramesh Dhakal and Dhrubaraj Nandan on January 12 had issued the order to release Lamichhane on a bail.

On October 31, a charge sheet was registered against Lamichahne accusing him of raping a 17-year-old girl. Lamichhane’s lawyer had been claiming that adolescent girl was not a minor on the age ground. After the registration of the charge sheet, Lamichhane was kept in a judicial custody. Police had apprehended him from the Tribhuvan International Airport on last October 6.
