Kathmandu: In the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, there has been a debate on whether Home Minister Ravi Lamichhane is unfit to be a member of parliament.

During the hearing of the petition filed in the Supreme Court saying that Lamichhane was unfit for the position of MP, the advocate on behalf of the petitioner argued that Lamichhane’s position as MP should be revoked.

Senior advocate Surendra Bhandari argued since Lamichhane is not a Nepali citizen he cannot become a Nepali MP. Bhandari’s argument was that Ravi Lamichhane is ineligible to be a member of parliament as there is a clear provision that he must be a Nepalese citizen according to Article 87, Clause 1 of the Constitution of Nepal.

He claims that Lamichhane is still an American citizen because he has not completed the process of renouncing American citizenship and taking Nepali citizenship.

Senior advocate Surendra Bhandari and advocates Raman Karna, Nanibabu Khatri and Raviraj Basoula have argued on behalf of the writ petitioner.
