Kathmandu: Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has demanded the authority concerned to immediately release journalist Gajendra Rai.

Noting that the incident of detaining member of FNJ Udayapur chapter and Radio Nepal’s district reporter and operator of Nigarani Post online, Rai, for covering news was anti-press activity, the umbrella organization of journalists called for the government to release him from detention.

According to FNJ Udayapur chapter, police arrested journalist Rai from Triyuga municipality-11, Gaighat Bazaar, BP Chowk on November 26 in course of reporting recently held elections to the members of House of Representatives and Province Assembly.

He had been reporting the issues related to social anomalies and aberrations. “Despite provision that complaint can be lodged at the Press Council Nepal if any news content disseminated is subject to discontent, it is against freedom of expression to arrest journalist Rai and proceed with cybercrime case against him”, reads the release issued by FNJ.
